Questions and answers

Getting started

Windows says “Windows protected your PC”. Is it dangerous?

That is how Windows treats programs without a digital signature, and Studio is not signed yet. Click “More info” → “Run anyway”.

To make sure the zip is the right one, compare its SHA-256 with the one on the download page.

Studio says there is no Oodle decompressor. What now?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 compresses its data with Oodle by Epic Games, but the game has no separate decompressor file. Studio cannot ship one: the file belongs to Epic.

Such a file (oo2core*.dll) comes with Unreal Engine and the Zone Kit, free but large programs from Epic, and with some other games.

  • Studio finds and uses files from Epic on its own.
  • A file from another game is used only after you confirm it: whether that game’s licence allows this use has not been checked.
  • If no file is found, Studio shows the options and a “Choose file…” button.

Which versions of the game work? Steam, GOG, Game Pass?

Tested with Steam: game 2.0.6 with the Cost of Hope DLC. Studio can also look for GOG, Epic and Game Pass installs, but they have not been tested yet. After a game update, Studio offers to read the game data again.

The game and mods

Will a mod break my saves?

Studio mods only change the numbers of existing records and add no new items, so removing a mod should not harm your saves. But this is a beta: make a separate save before you check, so you can go back to it.

The game keeps some values in the save itself. For example, the rounds already in a magazine stay until a full reload.

I installed a mod, but nothing changed in the game.

Check these in order:

  1. Did you start the game after installing? Mods are loaded only when the game starts, so restart it if it was open.
  2. Are you looking in the right place? The magazine changes after a full reload, trader stock when the trader restocks (sleep 8+ hours).
  3. Is ZoneCheats or another mod overriding the value?
  4. My mods → “Did the game pick up the mod?” shows whether the game opened the mod file.

And remember, this is a beta: no Studio change is confirmed in the game yet. If a change has no effect, it may be our bug, and that is exactly what we are checking right now.

I changed the magazine, but the HUD shows the same number.

The new number shows after a full reload: the magazine already in the weapon keeps its rounds.

Before 0.2.2, the Magazine field changed the weapon record, while, according to the game’s code, the capacity comes from the magazine itself (still being confirmed in the game). Update to 0.2.2: Studio finds such changes in your mods and offers to move them to the magazine.

How do I remove a mod?

My mods → “Remove from game”. The game must be closed. The mod goes to the Studio bin, where you can restore it or delete it for good.

Without Studio: delete the Name_P.pak file from the Stalker2\Content\Paks\~mods folder in the game folder.

Does Studio work with other mods?

Studio never changes other mods in ~mods. Its own mod rewrites only single fields, so it gets along with mods that change other things. When other mods touch the same records, Studio shows it in My mods; usually that is not a problem.

If two mods change the very same field, only one value works in the game; which one has not been tested yet.

I use ZoneCheats. Why does my value have no effect?

ZoneCheats features for weight, ammo, prices, no reload and rate of fire can override your mod’s numbers. Switch them off while you check your changes. Studio warns you itself when it finds ZoneCheats and your mod changes such fields.

About the program

Is this allowed? What does GSC say?

GSC Game World officially supports S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 modding: it released the Zone Kit and guides, including how to make cfg mods. Zone Mod Studio makes exactly such cfg mods, text changes in the ~mods folder, just without code.

It is an unofficial fan tool: GSC did not make, review or endorse it.

What can’t Studio do?

Studio changes the numbers of records that already exist. It does not make new items, models, textures, quests or locations; that is what the Zone Kit is for.

Carry weight, stamina, repair, stashes and difficulty cannot be edited yet: search and the goal tiles mark them “Not in Studio yet”. They are planned.

Does Studio send anything to the internet?

No. The program has no telemetry and never goes online. Game data, mods, change history and check answers stay on your PC.

This site has no ads and no cookies. It counts visits with Cloudflare’s anonymous cookie-free statistics and counts downloads without storing IP addresses; the fonts are loaded from Google Fonts. Details: Privacy.

What languages does the program speak?

English and Ukrainian; switch any time. Studio takes the names of items, weapons and NPCs from the game itself.

Is it free? What is the licence?

Yes, Zone Mod Studio is a free beta. The final licence is not chosen yet: for now you may run and test the program. If you want to share it, please link to this site.

Where does Studio keep its data, and how do I uninstall it?

The game cache, settings, logs and backups are in %LOCALAPPDATA%\ZoneModStudio; your mods are in Documents\Zone Mod Studio. In portable mode everything sits in a data folder next to the program.

To uninstall, first remove your mods in My mods, then delete the program folder, %LOCALAPPDATA%\ZoneModStudio and, if you like, Documents\Zone Mod Studio.
